An Apartment for Independent Senior Citizens
In 1953, some community-minded and faithful men and women under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. Walter H. Walsh, and by the authority of the Presbytery of West Toronto, established a congregation in Rexdale. Using the corner property located at Rexdale Boulevard and Bergamot, a small portable place was erected and used during the years 1956 – 1958. The congregation grew and in November 1958 the first church building was built.
Through the years, the congregation sought various ways to serve the Rexdale Community. The Mission of the church always remained to be to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, fellowship and service. In 1975, after much prayerful thought and consideration, under the leadership of the Reverend Edward O’Neil, it was decided by the congregation that the original church building be demolished to make way for a senior citizens apartment building, and a new church sanctuary. The building commenced in May of 1976 and, in June of 1977, the Highway Terraces Apartments was ready for occupancy.
The complex is owned and operated by Rexdale Presbyterian Senior Citizens Corporation, whose Board of Directors consists of five members of Rexdale Presbyterian Church and five members from the Presbytery of West Toronto.
